Colorectal cancer management is multi disciplinary and well supported by nurse specialists, radiologists, oncologists, histopathologists, hepatobiliary surgeons, gastroenterologists, dieticians and palliative care specialists.
We provide two week wait access cancer referrals for suspected lower GI cancers and these patients are investigated efficiently and rapidly with support services such as endoscopy and radiology. Patients diagnosed with colorectal cancers have a 24/7 access to colorectal services through our dedicated colorectal nurse specialists.
All four consultant surgeons are accredited for laparoscopic surgery and patients follow an enhanced recovery pathway following surgery.
In addition to this, there is a comprehensive anorectal physiology and endoanal ultrasound service provided by the department. Transanal endoscopic surgery (TEMS) is also performed for suitable cases. Diagnostic endoscopic services are well established and we provide therapeutic services such as advanced polypectomies and endoscopic mucosal resections (EMR), colorectal stent insertions and balloon dilatation for strictures. The endoscopy unit is accredited for screening and colonoscopic screening is routinely performed.
Management of Inflammatory Bowel Disease is also multidisciplinary and combined clinics with gastroenterologists are run on a regular basis.
The unit has a good academic background, participates in national audits and multicentre trials and presents routinely in national and international meetings. The Joint Advisory Group for Endoscopy has awarded the Endoscopy team full accreditation.

Family Screening Clinic
We offer a clinic for people who are concerned about a family history of colorectal (bowel) cancer. If you are concerned about your family history then please speak to your GP who can make a referral to us.
It is important to stress that it is rare for colorectal cancers to have a genetic/family link. At the clinic a specialist nurse will look at your family history of cancer, specifically colorectal cancer. The age of any affected family members and their relationship to you. You will be given information on what if any further investigations are required and if necessary we will make on onward referral to the specialist genetic team at Birmingham. It is important that you complete the forms sent to you and bring them to your appointment or send them to the following e-mail address - colorectal
DO NOT send the forms to Birmingham as they do not accept referrals from non-health professionals.
