What is a spinal brace?

A spinal orthosis or back brace is a brace which is worn to support the spine. It is prescribed to reduce pain, promote healing and restrict movement in the back.

How do I wear my brace?

The brace is provided for you only and should not be worn by anybody else. Your orthotist or the medical team will show you how the brace is put on and off. The brace should be worn over a light vest or t shirt only. The brace should be worn tightly enough so that it does not move in normal activity but should not cause any rubs.

When do I wear my brace?

The wearing plan can vary depending on the risk to the spine. It might be worn just for mobilising, for sitting and standing, or all the time. Your clinical team will guide you on this depending on your needs.

It is extremely important that the brace is worn consistently as directed to allow the back to fully recover.

How long will I need to wear my brace for?

It will be worn for a period depending on your needs and as advised by the medical team. Please make sure that you are aware of this information before discharge.

What do I do if problems occur?

The brace should be introduced gradually, and you should check for rubs or skin damage as you begin to wear it in. If problems occur and you are still on the ward, please ask ward staff for a member of the orthotics team to visit. If you have been discharged and need a review of the brace, please contact the department on the number below. If skin damage persists, please stop wearing the brace and request an urgent review with orthotics.
