What are insoles?

Insoles are orthotic devices which support the foot and fit inside a shoe. They may be made of different materials such as foam or thermoplastic.

A pair of insoles

What are they for?

The insoles are to provide support and stability. They are designed to reduce pain in the foot and legs in walking and reduce the risk of skin damage.

Will they be comfortable?

Insoles may feel strange to start with. They should not feel uncomfortable, although they may take some getting used to.

A gradual introduction is essential to avoid problems.

Please follow the wearing in advice given below:

Day 1: 30–60 minutes
Day 2: 1–2 hours
Day 3: 3–4 hours
Day 4: 4–6 hours

After a week you should be able to wear the insoles full time.

If pain, skin damage or problems persist then please stop using the insoles and contact the department for a review.

Which shoes should they be worn with?

The choice of shoe is important for an insole to work effectively. Shoes need to have suitable depth for the insoles – those with removable inlays work well. They should be fastening shoes, such as laces or velcro. They should have a normal heel height and be reasonably supportive. Court shoes, pumps or dress shoes will seldom work as well.
