About therapeutic footwear

There can be different reasons why it is difficult or impossible for people to buy suitable shoes from the shops. This may be due to the risks to the skin, the shape of the feet or mobility problems. In these cases, your orthotist may suggest prescribing footwear from the hospital.

What are they for?

The footwear we provide are intended for general day to day use, to enable mobility or protect the foot. They should be the main shoes or boots that you wear, and you should choose the style and colour of the footwear based on this.

Will they be comfortable?

A gradual introduction is essential to avoid problems. Hospital provided footwear tends to be supportive, so can take some wearing in. In the case of shoes for people with diabetes, it is essential that the wearer checks their feet visually after use, as they may not be able to feel any rubs.

Please follow the wearing in advice given below:

Day 1: 30–60 minutes Day 3: 3–4 hours
Day 2: 1–2 hours Day 4: 4–6 hours

If pain, skin damage or problems persist then please stop using the footwear and contact the department for a review.

Will I have to pay for the footwear?

We do not charge for footwear if it has a clinical benefit. However, we would like to make clear that these items are expensive and should be properly cared for. If you find that the shoes are becoming worn, we can resole or repair them via our suppliers. Please contact the department to drop them in for repair; a full appointment is not required.

Review procedure

Please follow the review advice given by your clinician.

Please note. If we do not hear from you within 24 months from your last appointment you will be discharged from the orthotics service, and a new referral will be required before another appointment is made.
