Introduction

This leaflet will provide you with information on the buddy strapping that has been applied to your child’s fingers/toes and how to care for them at home.

What is Buddy Strapping?

Buddy Strapping allows your child’s finger or toe (digit) to move whilst also providing protection. This is achieved by strapping the injured digit to the next finger or toe.

Gauze may be placed between the digits to help stop the finger or toes rubbing together.

What do I need to do at home?

Ensure the strapping applied to your child’s fingers or toes remains tight enough so that when they bend the uninjured digit it also brings the injured digit down with it.

Observe your child’s injury, as swelling may make the strapping too tight. If their injured finger/toe feels cold to touch, start to change colour or they get pins and needles, the strapping must be loosened.

Change the strapping if it gets wet. (Your nurse discharging you will provide you with information on how to do this)

Your child’s injury may take up to six weeks to heal. It is important that they avoid heavy activities and avoid contact sports until review in clinic or otherwise advised by your clinician.

Give regular paracetamol and ibuprofen (if allowed) as advised. Please ensure you follow the instructions on the medication bottle.
